quantum systems have opposing arrows of time

New theoretical research shows that time can flow forwards or backwards in quantum systems, challenging our everyday perception of how time progresses.

Over the centuries, scientists have tried to understand the arrow of time – the idea that time flows inevitably in one direction. How can we make sense of the seemingly unrelenting march of time from past to future?

Answers in fundamental physics haven’t been forthcoming. The laws of nature don’t inherently favour a single direction. Whether time moves forward or backward, the equations remain the same.

The explanation of our everyday experience of time is the second law of thermodynamics derived by Austrian physicist Ludwig Boltzmann.

This law states that entropy – the inherent disorder in a system – cannot decrease with the passage of time. This law explains very well the macroscopic world of our everyday experiences.     READ MORE...

Spinach Quiche Recipe

Spinach Quiche Recipe Ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need to make this spinach quiche recipe:
Spinach, of course! I use fresh baby spinach here because I like the texture of the whole leaves. Thawed frozen chopped spinach works too.
Eggs and milk – They create the custard filling. You can use any kind of milk you like here. Whole milk and unsweetened almond milk both work great!
Feta cheese or goat cheese – It adds tangy, salty flavor to the filling.
Green onions – For a fresh, oniony kick.
Salt and pepper – To make all the flavors pop!
Easy Pie Crust – It’s flaky, buttery, and super simple to make. This recipe yields enough dough for two quiches. Make both side-by-side, or freeze the extra dough for up to 3 months. To simplify this recipe, you could use a store-bought pie crust.

Tips for Success
Par-bake the crust.
It’s worth repeating: when you’re making quiche, always blind bake the crust before you add the filling. Without blind baking, the crust will be gummy and underdone on the bottom. With it, the crust comes out gloriously flaky and crisp. Note that you’ll blind bake the crust at a higher oven temperature than you’ll use for the actual quiche. The high heat is crucial for getting delicious layers in the pastry.

Squeeze the spinach.
A classic quiche pitfall is using vegetables that release too much moisture into the filling, thereby preventing it from setting up. Avoid this by squeezing the excess water out of the spinach after you steam it. If you’re using thawed frozen spinach, skip the steaming step, but still press out as much moisture as you can.

Cook until it’s just set.
When you’re checking for doneness, remember that the quiche will continue cooking for a few minutes after it comes out of the oven. You want it to be soft and custardy, not overdone and dry, so aim to bake the eggs until they’re just set. In my oven, this takes 45 minutes.

Make it a meal.
Serve slices of spinach quiche for brunch alongside a green salad or fruit salad. Round out the menu with carrot muffins, strawberry muffins, or slices of lemon yogurt cake.

Seniors Traveling

My wife and I have been traveling together for over 30 years, before that we were married to other people and did not travel as much.

We have traveled to Alaska, Hawaii, the Caribbean, Europe, all over the lower 48, and taken over 12 cruises on four different cruise lines:

  • Royal Caribbean
  • Carnival
  • Celebrity
  • Norwegian
We prefer Royal Caribbean...

We have an American Express Delta credit card that we use as often as possible to generate frequent flyer points.  Currently, we have over 300,000 points.

When you are planning to fly, book reservations early in the day and make sure you have no deadlines on the other end of the flight.   Occasionally, airlines will overbook and ask for people to delay their flight.  The one time that we did that, we ended up with enough Delta Dollars to buy two round trip tickets (cabin class) to Hawaii.  We did this because we had to time constraints about getting to where we were going.

More advice in subsequent postings.

Stay tuned...

New York Yankees ditch their ban on beards after 49 years.

The team officially reversed a longstanding facial hair policy, allowing players and staff to maintain "well-groomed beards" moving forward. Lessons Learned

I spent 45 years in the marketplace of capitalism as an employee and as a company owner.  The problem with being an owner was when I was consulting, I needed to be out getting new business and vice versa...  as an employee, I reported to several bosses that were simply AASSHOLES...

WHAT DID I LEARN?

1.  Arrive early/stay late

2.  Be honest at all costs

3.  Respect/Trust the people you hire or don't hire them

4.  Always be prepared/Always do your homework

5.  Learn to say NO

6.  Take time for yourself/family

7.  Constantly re-educate

8.  Don't ask anyone to do anything that you could not do better unless it is our of your field of expertise

9.  Value teamwork

10.  Stay for life or switch companies every 3-5 years

The only reason why you have been hired or that you might hire others is trifold:

  • team player
  • add value
  • achieve goals/outcomes

Your education is meaningless

Your experience is meaningless

Your position is meaningless

IF YOU CANNOT ACHIEVE THOSE THREE BULLET POINTS

Quantum Mechanics 100 Years Old

A century ago, science went quantum. To celebrate, physicists are throwing a global, year-long party.

In 1925, quantum mechanics, the scientific theory that describes the unintuitive rules of physics on very small scales, began to crystallize in the minds of physicists.

Beginning in that year, a series of monumental papers laid out the theory’s framework.

Quantum physics has since permeated a wide range of scientific disciplines — explaining the periodic table, the lives and deaths of stars and more — and enabled technologies from the laser to the smartphone.     READ MORE...

Oussama Diab Artist

Oussama Diab applies a conceptual approach to painting by exploiting the stylistic variants of the medium as emotive prompts in order to explore how form can articulate the urgency of sociopolitical issues.

Based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, since 2015, Syrian-Palestinian artist Oussama Diab has made a name for himself through several collective exhibitions in the Emirates, in Egypt and in Canada. His dynamic, expressive work seeks to engage in humanity’s progress, which is why he focuses on perpetuating predecessors, who he admits have influenced him.

As such, one may notice a touch of Picasso, but also Basquiat and Munch. “Why, he says, doesn’t history repeat itself?”. In this artistic spiral, Oussama Diab, who was born living and breathing art, establishes a link here, presenting, for example, this piece, which is both complex and highly realistic, and which he christened “Kings, Masks and Other Things”.
