Quantum researchers observe real-time switching of magnet in heart of single atom

Researchers from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands have been able to see the magnetic nucleus of an atom switch back and forth in real time. They read out the nuclear
"spin" via the electrons in the same atom through the needle of a scanning tunneling microscope.

To their surprise, the spin remained stable for several seconds, offering prospects for enhanced control of the magnetic nucleus. The research, published in Nature Communications, is a step forward for quantum sensing at the atomic scale.

A scanning tunneling microscope (STM) consists of an atomically sharp needle that can "feel" single atoms on a surface and make images with atomic resolution.

Israel targeted Hamas leaders in strike in Qatar. At least five people were killed in the Qatari capital of Doha in an airstrike launched by Israel, which said it was targeting Hamas senior leadership. Hamas said five of its members were killed but that the strike failed to assassinate its senior officials. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the US was notified in advance of the attack, calling its location in a residential Doha neighborhood “unfortunate” while supporting Israel’s goal of eliminating Hamas. Qatar has served as the primary mediator between Israel and Hamas on ceasefire negotiations, and experts say the strike risks destabilizing talks to end the conflict and upending efforts to normalize relations between Israel and Gulf Arab nations.

Historic $50 billion mining merger in the works. Huge news for coal enthusiasts: Anglo American reportedly agreed to buy Canada’s Teck Resources in a merger worth $50 billion, making it one of the biggest in the history of the mining industry. The deal would give Anglo, which recently exited platinum, access to Teck’s enviable and increasingly important copper mining business. It still needs to be approved by Teck shareholders as well as regulators in the US, Canada, and China.

Nepal protests death toll rises to 22. Protesters set fire to Nepal’s Parliament building in Kathmandu yesterday on the second day of anti-corruption protests. The Gen-Z-driven demonstrations began in response to the government’s decision last week to ban several social media platforms, including Instagram and WhatsApp. The ban was later reversed and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has since resigned, but the protests have expanded into a broader dissatisfaction with the country’s government. The Nepali military said it was “committed to taking control of the situation” while asking protesters for restraint.—AE

Office Hours: Who’s the Worst of the Worst in Trumpworld?

Friends,

As we learn ever more about how the Trump regime is destroying America, it’s useful to take stock of Trump’s key henchmen.

History shows a tendency for sick tyrants — sociopaths and malignant narcissists who rule through fear and ignorance — to attract people with similarly twisted personalities. The sadistic Roman emperor Caligula (37 to 41 AD) relied on a handful of demonic loyalists to implement his cruelty. Adolf Hitler depended on propaganda chief Joseph Goebbels, SS leader Heinrich Himmler, Luftwaffe chief Hermann Göring, and Hitler’s private secretary, Martin Bormann.

On whom is Trump most relying? And who is the worst of the worst of them? Let me give you four candidates, along some of their recent outrages:

Siblings

As we get older, we tend to have a desire to grow closer to our birth family in addition to the family we have with our spouse.

Throughout my lifetime, I have talked with numerous people, both male and female, who say they have brothers and sisters but either have not talked with them in years or have grown apart after leaving home.

Their main reason for the separation is that they are living different lifestyles, they did not get along with each other while living with their parents, or that they have very little in common.

They recognize that they are still family but are comfortable waiting for the other sibling to reach out first.  This is just another way of saying they are wanting to avoid what they know they should do.

The irony about this entire situation is that if the parents were still alive, their desire would have been for their children to have remained friends despite their differences.  However, what their parents wanted is no longer relevant.

Family will always be family despite any and all differences as the parents will always be the same even if there are or were multiple marriages.  One cannot simply not have parents and simply cannot do away with siblings.

And yet, this is exactly what happens to most families who continue to live in America.  Brothers and sisters are simply not that important, unless they share YOUR SAME INTERESTS...

What does that say about us as a species???

A Cosmic Void May Be Skewing Our Understanding of the Universe

“You can journey to the ends of the earth in search of success,” 19th-century Baptist preacher Russell Conwell is said to have proclaimed, “but if you’re lucky, you will discover happiness in your own backyard.”

Modern cosmology has stepped far beyond our cosmic backyard. We peer into the light from the earliest moments of the big bang. Our surveys stride across the universe, swallowing millions of galaxies at a time. We have mapped and measured the most subtle accelerations of cosmic expansion.
