Exercise

 

On my 40th birthday, I quit smoking, drinking, eating red meat, and fried foods.  I also allowed myself to cheat with 3-4 cheeseburgers a year, 3-4 hotdogs a year, 3-4 pizzas a year, and something fried once or twice a year.  NO SMOKING and maybe 1-2 glasses of wine at Christmas.

Not only did I put the above into action, but I made sure I got 6-8 hours of sleep as well as exercised at least 20 minutes each day.  I ended up exercising about 50-60 minutes each day which included treadmill, bike, and strength machines.  No dead weights.

At the age of 60, I experienced severe heart attack while walking on the treadmill at home but because of my health my body had already created its own bypass which save my life.  I had 5 stents put into three arteries over a period of two years.  Never had any problems since then.

My cardiologist said my heart attack should not have happened...  it was an anomaly.

That was refreshing to hear.

Doing everything right is not going to prevent you from having something bad go wrong with your body.  In fact, an orthopedic surgeon recently told me that exercise is the main reason (along with arthritis) for hip, shoulder, and knee replacements.

Staying active was more important than exercise...  staying active is mowing grass, working in the yard, standing more than sitting, etc.

Marlene Dumas - Artist

Dumas was born in 1953 in Cape Town, South Africa and grew up in Kuils River in the Western Cape, where her father had a vineyard. Dumas witnessed the system of apartheid during her childhood. 

Dumas began painting in 1973 and showed her political concerns and reflections on her identity as a white woman of Afrikaans descent in South Africa. She studied art at the University of Cape Town from 1972 to 1975, and then at Ateliers '63 in Haarlem, which is now located in Amsterdam.

She studied psychology at the University of Amsterdam in 1979 and 1980. She currently lives and works in the Netherlands and is one of the country's most prolific artists.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

Everyone thinks about that as a child...  then, overlooks it again until high school when they exposed to the potential of college...  or not college.

College is expensive so unless you are going to be a doctor, engineer, Teacher, scientist, physicist, lawyer, or some kind of professional, there is little need to go.

What do you want to be when you grow up is a misleading question because we are growing up throughout our entire career, and as we age, so too does our expectations of what having a good life is or is not.

Many of us do not like how we are being treated by our employers so we find ways of owning our own business, that we never thought about earlier in our lives.

Or, similarly, we find ourselves getting a degree in nuclear engineering, spend some time on a nuclear submarine, then spend the rest of our career as a nuclear consultant.

Of course, there are all sorts of variations to that, it was just a friend of mine shared that career path with me a while back.

Some of us work for 20-30 years and at the age of 50, decide we want out of the rat race and become a chicken farmer or invest in a vineyard.

The point is, what you want out of life changes as you grow older, so it is not that important, for some of us, to decide right away.
